Eight-Year-Old Gives Back to Mott

As Amelia Oxley’s 8th birthday approached, her mother asked what the young girl wanted. In place of gifts, Amelia asked people to make donations to C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital’s Congenital Heart Center.

Her decision was inspired by her two-year-old brother, Isaac, who was born at Mott in 2014 with a congenital heart defect. Isaac underwent two heart surgeries within the first week of his life.

“Isaac’s diagnosis affected our family in many ways, and Amelia knew she wanted to help,” Sara Oxley, Amelia’s mother, says. “She personally called friends and family, and explained she was fundraising for Mott.”

Amelia raised $222.00.

“We chose Mott because we needed the best for Isaac’s treatment,” Sara says. “And we chose to give back to them because we know the importance of research. There are many children living with these illnesses, and they need our help.”

Today, Isaac is doing well. As for Amelia, her fundraising is just getting started.

“I couldn’t quit smiling, Mom,” Amelia says. “I want to fundraise for Mott again.”
