Saving the Eyesight of Diabetes Patients

Tom Gardner, M.D.

Inspired by his brothers’ fight with diabetes, Tom Gardner, M.D., left private practice and entered academic medicine to more quickly find a way to save the eyesight of patients with diabetes. As the A. Alfred Taubman Medical Research Institute’s first JDRF Healthy Eyes Scholar, he is collaborating with clinicians and scientists across the Medical School to improve current treatments and search for new molecular approaches to care. In addition, Dr. Gardner is working to raise awareness of what the growing diabetes epidemic in young people could mean for their vision down the road.
